For your anon: since you're Greek the History and Archaeology major in university is the closest you can pursue. It has I think a few courses for mythology and if you choose archaeology and art history (in order to become an archaeologist rather than choose history as your major which most likely will lead you to teaching options only) you will be more involved with ancient stuff. Check your city or other cities university and the course guide. I hope this is useful 😁

i've just discovered your blog and i'm fucking in love with it! i love greek mythology since i was like 5 or smth. my grandma used to buy us books with the greek heroes and she was reading them to us. so it is a very fond memory of mine and it stimulated my interest in mythology. (also i'm greek btw). i wanted to ask you, are there any potential careers and uni courses that one can take in order to study/work on the field? thank you, love :) xx

This is so sweet!! I love that you’re thinking about pursuing this in higher education, that’s super admirable :)

My university had like… basically one course on Greek mythology, however there was a Comparative Literature major where I think you could write a thesis on a literary piece of your choice. Take note though that I went to a public and very STEM focused university, so I’m sure you’ll find more options if you go to like a private liberal arts college.

As for careers, from my limited knowledge, I would say that your options are probably going to be along the lines of teaching, research, writing, museum curation, cultural exchange programs, or being involved as a historical consultant for art projects. I bet there are more options out there that I’m not aware of too!

My third time watching Black Panther and I finally decide to look this song up and LO AND BEHOLD, IT IS PERFECT FOR MY SAD GAY SONS.

Here we have Achilles after Patroclus’ death. Not right after his death, but a bit of time after when the wounds aren’t quite as fresh. He’s been living without Patroclus for a bit of time now and the madness has passed. Now he lives in his own personal purgatory, just going through the motions and killing the same faceless enemy in droves day after day, feeling lost and alone, not quite sure why he’s fighting anymore.

Can we also please talk about this line?

These are not fighting words. These are not the words of a determined warrior. These are the words of someone resigned and tired. At this point Achilles isn’t fighting for glory or even to stay alive anymore. He’s just waiting for someone to kill him and fulfill the prophecy because, fuck, he’s killed Hector already… why are they making him wait?

He’s crying out for Patroclus who has been his anchor to humanity for the better part of his life, but he’s also crying out for literally anyone to kill him so that he can stop being a shell of his old self that’s been tainted and twisted into something uglier and even less human than before.

Ah the age old question… It’s honestly so funny how little humanity has changed. Shipping wars and top/bottom debates… only these people were seen as gifted and respected scholars whereas now we’re just crazy fans with a crazy queer agenda that “read too much into it”.

Here in Greece we don't really accept that Patroclus and Achilles were anything more than friends,cousins or at least Platonic lovers. What have you been taught at school?

I had two instances where I learned about Achilles and Patroclus in a school setting. The first was in high school, where we just BARELY talked about them as a pair. All the focus in that class was on Odysseus because we were only really required to know the Iliad as a lead-up to the Odyssey. But ultimately, they were just talked about as best friends.

My second, much more in depth, encounter with them was in college. I took a mythology class and we talked about them briefly and my professor pretty much explicitly stated that they were lovers.

My suspicion is that in high school, their relationship was never even mentioned as potentially homoerotic because, while I was in high school, the legalization of gay marriage was a pretty controversial topic (even living in northern California!) and the school probably had some rules on what instructors were and weren’t allowed to talk about. Whereas I attended a very liberal university where instructors had no such limitations on what they could say or teach.

Ultimately, my opinion of them as proof that true love exists came from my own exploration of their stories rather than from any educational institution. The movie Troy that was released in 2004 opened the floodgates for me and ever since, I’ve consumed films, books, academic articles, documentaries, wikipedia pages, fanfiction, random material that shows up on google searches, and artwork about them and just decided for myself “…they gay.”
